Amberside Advisors is delighted to announce that yesterday the members of the North London Waste Authority agreed to the award of the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contract to Acciona for the new Energy Recovery Facility at Edmonton.
The ERF forms part of a £1.2 billion investment in Edmonton in Enfield known as the North London Heat and Power Project (NLHPP), which will serve seven north London boroughs. It includes state-of-the art recycling and waste facilities with the most advanced technology in the world. The new facilities will replace a single energy-from-waste plant on the 16-hectare site, which began operating in 1971 and is now Europe’s oldest.
The contract signing ensures the creation of hundreds of skilled jobs including at least 418 full time roles, 180 training placements and 90 apprenticeships, bringing exciting career opportunities for local people. These new positions are in addition to hundreds of roles already created to take the project to this point.
This was followed by the approval of the award of contract in the North London Waste Authority Meeting on 16-December 2021.
The Authority decision was supported by a comprehensive technical report which set out the benefits and risks of the facility which highlighted the emissions savings from the plant adopting both Selective Catalytic Reduction – to reduce NOx – and a wet / dry scrubber system – to manage particulates and other emissions.
The report makes clear the potential to adopt a carbon capture, utilisation and storage (CCUS) solution, located once the existing facility is demolished (in 2030). Furthermore, the report confirmed the value-for-money of the solution against the alternative (largely taking waste to landfills) which would involve a significantly higher levy on the 7 Local Authorities.
Viet Nguyen, Associate Director, commented: “Amberside was delighted to play a pivotal role in helping shape the value-for-money proposition for the ERF through our industry-leading operational modelling, analysis and commercial insight. We are excited to support the NLHPP team in the next phase of this project.”
