Driving sustainable change: supporting NHS estate decarbonisation with a new multidisciplinary framework appointment

After a year-long evaluation process, in February 2024 the NHS announced appointed suppliers for its multidisciplinary framework for Consultancy and Advisory Services for Health. Set to go live in March 2024, this framework signals a pivotal step towards a sustainable and decarbonised future for the NHS.

In a joint bid, Amberside Advisors together with Steer, secured an appointment for three lots within the new NHS framework, that will allow us to provide services across finance and procurement, property, and social value, sustainability and carbon neutrality.

‘This appointment opens a new route for Steer and Amberside Advisors to be involved in decarbonising the NHS estate. With Lot 6 playing particularly to Amberside strengths, we believe that Lot 9 is perfectly aligned with Steer capabilities in transport-related space, e.g. looking at the patient travel challenges that NHS is facing.‘ commented Neil Rutledge, Director at Amberside Advisors, expressing confidence in alignment of the NHS’s decarbonisation goals and our capabilities.

‘Building on our experience working in the healthcare sector, such as delivering exciting decarbonisation projects with Guy’s & St Thomas’ Trust, we are delighted to be given further opportunity to support the NHS on their journey to Net Zero. At both Trust and Integrated Care Board level, we are seeing increased focus on how Green Plans can actually deliver Net Zero commitments.‘ he added.

Meanwhile, Steer bring its multidisciplinary expertise encompassing planning, design, business case development and behaviour change management, with recent work for the NHS including improving the patient experience and wayfinding for University Hospitals Sussex NHS Foundation Trust to support their masterplan and redevelopment in Brighton.

“We are delighted to expand our work for the NHS, helping to improve the experience for staff, patients and visitors whilst also tackling their challenging decarbonisation commitments in a cost-effective manner.” Stephen Wainwright, Steer UK Managing Director.

Recognising the significance of the tender, we have incorporated substantial social value commitments into its bid, reflecting a dedication to creating positive societal impacts. Initiatives include exploring opportunities to reduce the reliance on car travel for patients and visitors, addressing existing inequalities, and offering educational events and resources.

Both, Amberside Advisors and Steer, are looking forward to many successful projects through this framework, fostering a collaborative journey towards a more sustainable and resilient healthcare sector.
