Enhancing solar asset management with a planning model and scenario analytics
June 2024
Our client has acquired a majority stake in a UK-based solar portfolio with two sub-portfolios and was in the planning stage for further asset acquisitions in the sector. As part of the onboarding exercise, they were looking to commission a planning model for asset management and KPI purposes. Having worked previously with Amberside Advisors on other renewable assets, the client knew we were best placed to build them a dedicated model that would help them quickly understand the value of the portfolio.

The solar portfolio acquired by the client consisted of a levered and an unlevered sub-portfolio, of 20 and 30 sites respectively. The existing two portfolio models were deemed overly complicated and the client appointed Amberside Advisors to build a new model, that would incorporate the two existing models, a third for assets to be acquired and a fourth for future acquisitions.
Having worked with us on previous engagements, the client understood the quality of the model build and value added from Amberside, which is always robust, transparent, easy to navigate, and has dedicated functionality to update for management accounts and macroeconomic actuals.
The new model built by us presents financial statements for both the levered and unlevered portfolio, as well as the future portfolio of development and acquisitive assets. It supports the quarterly valuation process and demonstrates performance of KPI's.
In addition to building a dedicated model in Excel, Amberside Advisors have also developed an enhanced visualisation dashboard extension to the model, that allows a richer, deeper analysis of scenarios. Built in PowerBI, the dashboard which refreshes automatically with any updates to the model, helps identify trends and provides a ‘drilldown’ capability to interrogate the model in a very visual way.
